SEARS™ I
Can Swim Program
The
I Can Swim program is a revolutionary
swimming program designed for Canadians of all ages and all levels
of swimming
ability. With a combination of proven instruction techniques and
supportive feedback, I Can Swim gives
every swimmer the opportunity to learn and enjoy the sport of swimming
for life. So whether
you want to be the next Olympic gold medallist or just swim for
fun and fitness, I Can Swim is for you!

Proven
teaching methods, personal rewards, and great role models: I
Can Swim introduces all participants, including
physically and mentally challenged swimmers, to hundreds of proven
swimming
techniques. In the first stages of the program alone, 54
key swimming skills are developed and are recognized with certificates
and badges. Kids are given fun and colourful skills posters
that let them track their progress and take pride in their achievements.
The Windsor Aquatic Club's I
Can Swim program includes:
Stage 1: Orientation
to Water. This
is the main stage for establishing a sound basis for orientation
to the water
and the acquisition of swimming skills.
Stage
2: Skill Development. This stage focuses
on the basic movements and coordination needed for swimming skills
like arm
action, sculling and breathing.
Stage
3: Skill Improvement. Involves improving all four strokes,
reaction/rhythm abilities and increasing endurance. More advanced
dives and basic turns are also covered.
ICS SWAD: This is a unique program for Swimmers With A Disability.

ICS
FAST: Skill Refinement. Focuses on the refinement of motor coordination
and introduction of speed swimming skills. The
focus is on swimming faster and more efficiently. The ICS
FAST Stage is a new change over the previous ICS Stage 4 and this program
is no longer sessional but for the entire swim season. It is a
change encouraged by Sears™ I Can
Swim, the sponsor of the
program, and is for kids moving up after completing the Stage 3C
session. These Stage 3 graduates will have sufficient swim skills
to begin concentrating on furthering competitive skills while maintaining
more individual instructor support in the water. The program is
not a competitive program but encourages participation in local
pre-competitive meets such as the SEAL meets. SEAL stands for St.
Clair Erie Aquatic League, and this pre-competitive league was
set up with local communities in the south western tip of Ontario
who all agree to host at least one meet per year if their pools
can accommodate a swim meet.
As the ICS
FAST swimmers are not part of the Competitive
program, their families are not required to volunteer for bingos,
but the swimmers
are encouraged to participate in the annual Swim-a-thon held each
spring. WAC still invites all parents to volunteer during the year.
The ICS FAST program offers 3 hours per week over an extended period
(38 weeks) in preparation for the move to the Competitive Junior
program which is 4 hours per week.

appropriate level.
The Windsor Aquatic Club Competitive
